South African wines shine at the Veritas Awards
The winners of the Veritas wine awards were announced this weekend. These awards are the most well-known and probably the most respected South African wine awards.
Stellenbosch based winery Fleur du Cap was the belle of the Veritas Awards ball held at the Cape Town International Convention Centre last night (Saturday 11 October) clinching three double gold and two gold medals amidst tough competition.
The closest rivals in the double gold medal stakes were Cederberg, Kleine Zalze, Nuy and Rust & Vrede with two double gold awards each. Other top performers in terms of double gold and gold medal tally, were Nederburg and Simonsig (one double gold, four gold each) and KWV (one double gold, three gold).
Other extra ordinary performances were from Van Loveren Wineries. Their Wolverine Creek Chardonnay Reserve 2007 won double gold while their Wolverine Creek Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve 2007 won gold.
The Arniston Bay Sauvignon Blanc 2008 won gold and this is an indication that the quality of the “every day drinking” wine are improving. Of the total 1 753 entries, 36 (2%) won double gold, 98 (6%) gold, 412 (24%) silver and 696 (40%) bronze medals.
